Clear, clean, sharp house music with a techy edge on the three-track Fever EP from Jennifer Loveless. “Heaven (Late Night)” begins with a minute of drifty floating pad chords before introducing its neat, clipped drum track and some carefully programmed and arranged synth details, and then drops a gnarly, mid-range-heavy bassline that balances things out nicely. “UUP” is a driving bass & drums house track that feels kind of efficient, effective, with little in the way of adornment, and everything there to serve the greater purpose: the way the sounds are spaced out, it all fits together like a sonic jigsaw, with no rough edges or overlapping. And it’s the same with the title track “Fever,” which has the same fresh, shiny aesthetic but is a little sweeter, with a pair of smooth pad chords that are then nicely de-sweetened by very gently musically clashing with the rubbery lead synth stab. The whole EP feels like solid dancefloor fodder, with little sonic fuss or fanfare, and I’ve a feeling those carefully programmed shiny synth sounds might just sound glorious on a big rig.
