He puts out a lot of records, Franck Roger, most of them pretty good, but from time to time he drops something that particularly gets me, and there’s something about “The Other Side” from his recent flurry of releases that does just that. It’s got a muted swirling pad in the background all the way through, a crisp side stick drum pattern, a gently warping pad chord and a decent rolling b-line that appears without fanfare to drive the whole thing along, creating a pretty slick, atmospheric, and driving underground house groove. Then just when you’re thinking “OK nice one Franck, another tasty groove,” he drops a breakdown that sounds a little like when construction workers are digging up the road outside where you work, before the track heads off into a more abstract and FX-heavy version of its first half. And if that wasn’t enough, he then slips in a lovely square wave riff to see us out. Great piece of house music, eventful without being predictable or obvious, just quality, heads-down, creative, grooving original deep house.
