Following up on their sensational 2024 Freaknik EP on Freerange, Ralph Session and Juliet Mendoza return with Mad Deep, a four track EP marking the latest release from Quintessentials and the second in this issue. We play no favorites, at least not this time: these are two slamming EPs dropped one right after another.
The title track to “Mad Deep” is just what you can imagine from saying the name: supremely mental, get-your-head-down-and-deep-in-your-own-vibe music. When people worry about AI putting artists out of commission, have no fear: tracks like this can’t be replicated, just copied. Like a trashtalking savant on a basketball court, this track is telling you exactly what it’s going to do to you before it does it and you couldn’t stop it if you wanted to. Jerome Sydenham tunes it up into a sleek dub on the remix, and there’s an instrumental which strips out a sassy vocal that interplays with the percussion really well.
“Sway” is the second original, low-slung, cool and full of swagger, with a vocal surfacing like an orchestra hit and — I’m serious here — an “mm, hm, hm!” that immediately made me want to fuck everyone over and sample it for myself. House standards-in-the-making here.
