Nathalie Capello’s Dreams is filled with shooting stars but “Dizzy” is the track with the maximum impact. Her new EP on Hot Haus released this month brings to mind something of the early ’90s rave and mixtape scene, less for nostalgia than for the catholicity of an era before the great genres began to drift apart like tectonic plates. Dreams is buoyant, swanky, glimmering like candied glass and Capello will dig absolutely anywhere — deep house, progressive, proto-trance and the R&B pop stylzings of ’80s house OGs like JM Silk — for the right tool for the job.
With a huge vocal and a hook that straps your heart into a roller coaster, “Dizzy” is the standout track here, as polished as pop with crunchy beats and punchy, uplifting grooves. It’s a song in the classic sense, and apparently features Capello giving a critical performance at the mic as well.
The title track for Dreams is another case study in writing ridiculously addictive hooks, and “Lovers Jam” a kind of super-kinetic NYC 1989 groover.
This is a wide awake release for Nathalie Capello, who broke into the underground with 2020’s Diggin U EP on Jus-Ed’s Underground Quality — a record “that inhales 30 years of dance music lore, holds it for a second and breathes out some pure electronic vapor haze.”
